Me And Twitter

Did Ashton Kutcher Set You Free?

After the Twitter frenzy yesterday over Ashton Kutcher and CNN’s race to 1 million followers, it became pretty clear that old media is, in fact, not dead.

Somehow Kutcher has convinced much of the Twitter community that he’s a regular guy, and that beating CNN will somehow symbolize a victory for new media over old.

Since when is Hollywood new media?

Kutcher has 1 million followers and follows 70, he’s not talking to anyone outside his circle, which makes @aplusk a good old fashioned broadcast.  His stream not a stream, really, but a channel.

Since CNN is a news organization it makes sense they aren’t following back - they’re in the business of broadcast.

But what value does @aplusk add to my stream?  A steady diet of how he feels, what he’s doing and what his latest projects are?  I can find that out in the supermarket line, if I care.

Last night was mutually beneficial to CNN, Ashton Kutcher and Twitter.  And the rest of us?  Well, we do have thousands of more Twitter users to choose from.

Is that liberating?
